The Indus River

Much of the water that came from the floods of the Indus River came from snow in the Himalayas mountains. If you lived near/close to the Indus River then your main occupation would be farming and growing crops. The Indus River was 1 of the 2 rivers that made fertile land in ancient India. Not only does the Indus River brings water to drink but Monsoons do too. A monsoon is a strong wind that blows one direction in Winter and the opposite direction in Summer.

The Importance of the Indus River

To the people who lived near the Indus River, it was a big part of their life because it gave them water to drink, land to grow crops on and it helped them with transportation as well.  For example, if I was in the Harappa village and one of my family members died. I would get a raft and go all the way to the Mohenjo-daro to bury them there.   One of cons of living near a river was that it would flood.  But the people had a step ahead as they would built another house on top the flooded house(see the picture above). Plus the flood would also destroy crops that were farmed.

What was life like in the Indus valley?

If you were an adult  and a farmer than you would mainly be farming but there are other things to do. Such as cleaning up your house if it was messy, interact with other people, etc. If you was kid in the Indus valley, to pass the time you would play with toys,(such as a toy boat or car, dice blocks, little statues).  If you were the son or daughter of a farmer, you would  be taught to plant and grow crops.Children would also go to school and scribes would teach them religious lessons. If you was a parent of the child, you would have to save up enough coins,(picture of a coin above) to send your child(ren) to a school.   (Below is the aerial or bird's eye view of Mohenjo-Daro).
